Stray Angels Car Club
History

by Don Larsen

The Stray Angels Car Club was an idea of several guys that ran around together in September of 1958. Flyers were made, and the idea of a club was born. One could have a car, truck, bike or nothing at all. You didn't need a car; just the interest would do. If you had a car, it could be stock, custom, or anything in between. The stepdad of one of the guys was the Treasurer/Secretary for the Moose lodge and he was able to get the lodge to sponsor the club. The name came from one of the guys mom who said "We were all angels. We just strayed at times," and so became the Stray Angels. The guys in the club began helping with charity events and with a program taking the voters to the poles.

In the early 60's members began to join the service, go to college, and get married. The club then began to be secondary in the lives of the members. The members kept in touch with one another and kept going about their lives. In the early 70's they figured they weren't going to grow up and also wanted their children involved so they began being more formal. A reunion was planned to see if enough interest and commitment existed to keep the club going. The interest was strong and in the early 80's they started linking up with new members, and again began working with charities, Special Olympics, and other community events.

The Stray Angels helped with the first Graffiti Night Cruise, which was held on Harvard Cruising between Pete's Drive in and the A & W. The event was such a success it was decided by the club to hold the first Stray Angels Show-n-Shine at River Forks Park. The show would be held in conjunction with the Graffiti Night Cruise. The show will mark its 25th year in July of 2007. The Original Graffiti Night has grown and changed over the years becoming Graffiti Weekend, and a major attraction to Douglas County.

The Stray Angels continue the traditions of helping the community today. They are involved with Special Olympics Program, Muscular Dystrophy Association Events, Heart Association, Rotary, and Lions events and programs. Even today there are members without a vehicle, and members with stock, contemporary, custom vehicles, and street rods. The key to being a member of the Stray Angels is having an interest in the car hobby and an interest in the community.
